JKIA Departure Terminals Guide Terminal 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D and Terminal 2 at Nairobi Airport

Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, code NBO/HKJK, uses several terminal sections for international, regional and domestic departures. Most international passengers depart through Terminal 1A, 1B or 1C, domestic passengers commonly use Terminal 1D, and selected services may use the separate Terminal 2. Terminal allocation can change, so use this guide for orientation and confirm the final terminal through your airline, boarding pass and live airport information before travelling.

How to find the correct JKIA departure terminal

Do not select a terminal from an old airline list alone. The operating airline, route, ticket type and airport allocation all matter, and an airline may use different terminal sections for domestic and international flights.

1 Confirm the airport code
Make sure your booking shows NBO for JKIA. Wilson Airport is a separate airport with code WIL.
2 Check the operating airline
A codeshare may display more than one airline number. Use the carrier that is actually operating the aircraft.
3 Read the latest airline message
Check the booking, online check-in page, app, email or SMS for the current terminal and check-in instructions.
4 Track the flight number
Use the flight number on the live departures board rather than searching only by destination.
5 Tell the driver the terminal
Share the terminal and airline before leaving your hotel, residence or Wilson Airport.
6 Recheck after entering JKIA
Airport displays and airline staff provide the final check-in area, gate and operational instructions.
Most reliable rule: use the terminal shown by the operating airline on the travel day. Terminal assignments are operational and should never be treated as permanently fixed to one airline.
Airport orientation

JKIA departure terminal map and location of each terminal

Terminal 1A–1E form the main passenger-terminal complex. Terminal 2 is a detached building farther east. Use the map to understand the relative positions before arranging drop-off, parking or a terminal change.

Map of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport showing Terminal 1A, Terminal 1B, Terminal 1C, Terminal 1D, Terminal 1E, Terminal 2, roads and parking areas
Terminal 1A, 1B, 1C and 1D occupy the curved main terminal complex. Terminal 1E lies below the eastern side of that complex, while Terminal 2 is a separate building near parking areas P9, P10 and P11. Select the map to open a larger version.

Western side of Terminal 1

Terminal 1B is on the western side of the curved complex, with Terminal 1A positioned lower and south-west of it. These sections support international passenger operations.

Eastern side of Terminal 1

Terminal 1C and Terminal 1D occupy the eastern side of the main curved structure. Terminal 1C is associated with international departures, while Terminal 1D is the main domestic section.

Terminal 1E and Terminal 2

Terminal 1E lies below Terminal 1D and is mainly linked with international arrivals. Terminal 2 is detached from Terminal 1 and requires separate drop-off and transfer planning.

The map shows physical orientation rather than a permanent airline allocation. Always confirm the current departure terminal before travelling.

Terminal comparison

JKIA departure terminals at a glance

The table summarizes the normal role and map position of each terminal section. Current operational instructions take priority over the general pattern.

Terminal Common departure role Location in the airport complex Passenger action
Terminal 1A Major international departures, particularly Kenya Airways and partner operations depending on assignment. Lower-left or south-west side of the main Terminal 1 curve. Confirm the airline check-in area, departure immigration and gate.
Terminal 1B International departures for airlines allocated to the common-use international section. Western or left side of the main curved terminal complex. Check the current airline desk and live departure display.
Terminal 1C International departures and associated lounges or passenger services. Upper-right or north-east side of the main Terminal 1 curve. Confirm the check-in zone, security route and boarding gate.
Terminal 1D Domestic departures within Kenya. Right or eastern side of the main curved terminal complex. Use the domestic check-in and security process; no outbound immigration is normally required.
Terminal 1E Primarily international arrivals rather than normal scheduled departures. Below Terminal 1D on the south-east side of the main terminal spine. Do not use it for departure unless the airline or airport specifically directs you there.
Terminal 2 Selected domestic, regional or airline-specific departures. Separate building east of Terminal 1 near parking areas P9–P11. Arrange direct drop-off at T2 and allow extra time if changing from Terminal 1.
International departures

Terminal 1A departures at JKIA

Terminal 1A is one of JKIA’s principal international terminal sections. It is commonly associated with Kenya Airways international flights and partner or other international operations according to the airport’s current allocation. Jambojet’s official airport information also identifies Terminal 1A for its international flights, while its local flights use Terminal 1D.

On the map, Terminal 1A lies on the south-western side of the main curved Terminal 1 complex. A passenger dropped at the wrong side of the airport may need to walk or arrange movement to the correct entrance, so drivers should be told “Terminal 1A” rather than only “international departures.”

International terminal section

Terminal 1B departures at JKIA

Terminal 1B is an international-departures section on the western side of the main Terminal 1 complex. It may be used by international airlines operating from common-use check-in facilities, according to the current terminal allocation.

Passengers should not assume that every non-Kenya Airways international carrier always uses Terminal 1B. Some international services may use 1A or 1C, and operational changes can occur. Confirm the terminal in the airline app or departure notification before asking a driver to enter the airport approach road.

International terminal section

Terminal 1C departures at JKIA

Terminal 1C is another international-departures section within the main Terminal 1 complex. It lies on the north-eastern or upper-right side of the curved terminal layout, close to Terminal 1D on the map.

Terminal 1C contains international passenger facilities and lounge access. Kenya Airways states that its Asante Lounge at Terminal 1C operates 24 hours, although lounge eligibility depends on the passenger’s airline, status, ticket or paid-access rules.

Domestic departures

Terminal 1D domestic departures at JKIA

Terminal 1D is the main domestic terminal section for scheduled flights within Kenya. It is commonly used by Kenya Airways domestic services and Jambojet local flights. Jambojet’s current airport information identifies Terminal 1D for local flights, and its check-in guidance states that its JKIA counters are located there.

Domestic passengers normally complete airline check-in or bag drop and security screening without outbound immigration. Even though the process is shorter than an international departure, check-in closing times can be strict. Jambojet states that its counters open two hours before departure and close 40 minutes before departure; passengers using another airline must follow that airline’s own deadline.

Domestic does not mean last-minute: traffic, terminal security, bag drop and a closed check-in counter can still cause a missed flight. Reach Terminal 1D well before the airline’s published deadline.
Important distinction

Is Terminal 1E a departure terminal?

Terminal 1E is primarily associated with international arrivals, including immigration, baggage claim, customs and public exit. It should not be treated as the normal departure terminal simply because it is part of Terminal 1.

A passenger should go to Terminal 1E for departure only when the airline, airport screen or airport staff gives a specific instruction. Otherwise, international departure check-in is generally associated with Terminal 1A, 1B or 1C.

Separate terminal building

Terminal 2 departures at JKIA

Terminal 2 is physically separate from the main Terminal 1 complex. It may be used for selected domestic, regional, low-cost or airline-specific operations, depending on the current airport allocation.

The map places Terminal 2 east of Terminal 1 near parking areas P9, P10 and P11. A driver should be told explicitly that the passenger needs Terminal 2. Being dropped at Terminal 1 can create an unnecessary walk or road transfer and increase the risk of missing check-in.

Airline terminal checks

Which departure terminal does my airline use at JKIA?

Airline patterns help with initial planning, but they are not a substitute for the current flight-specific terminal. Codeshares, temporary reallocations and operational changes can place two flights by the same marketing airline in different processing areas.

Airline or flight type General JKIA pattern What the passenger should verify
Kenya Airways international Commonly associated with Terminal 1A, with facilities also available in other international sections. Check the KQ app, flight status, online check-in message and airport display.
Kenya Airways domestic Commonly Terminal 1D. Confirm that the flight is domestic and check the current terminal message.
Jambojet local flights Jambojet officially identifies Terminal 1D for local flights. Check the current booking and arrive before the airline’s counter-closing deadline.
Jambojet international flights Jambojet officially identifies Terminal 1A for international flights. Confirm the route classification and current airport instruction.
Other international airlines May use Terminal 1A, 1B or 1C according to allocation. Use the operating airline’s latest notice rather than a generic terminal list.
Selected regional or domestic services May use Terminal 1D or Terminal 2 depending on airline and operation. Check the terminal before airport drop-off.
Codeshare flight Terminal follows the operating carrier and flight operation. Find the words “operated by” on the booking and search that flight number.
Codeshare example: a ticket may show a partner-airline flight number while the aircraft and check-in are operated by another airline. The operating carrier’s terminal instructions normally control the airport process.
Departure process

What happens after you reach the correct JKIA departure terminal?

International and domestic departures share several steps, but international passengers normally complete additional document checks and departure immigration.

1 Enter the correct terminal
Use the airline and flight number to confirm the check-in area before joining a queue.
2 Complete airline check-in
Present the booking and travel documents, obtain a boarding pass and confirm the baggage allowance.
3 Drop checked baggage
Keep the baggage receipt and verify that the destination code on the tag is correct.
4 Pass security screening
Prepare liquids, electronics and cabin baggage according to the airline and security rules.
5 Complete departure immigration if required
International passengers present their passport and required travel documents.
6 Check the live gate
Gate assignments can change after check-in. Monitor airport screens and airline notifications.
7 Reach the gate before boarding closes
Do not remain in a lounge, café or shop after the airline begins final boarding.
Airport arrival time

How early should you reach your JKIA departure terminal?

Work backwards from the airline’s check-in and boarding deadlines, not only from the scheduled departure time. Your plan must include Nairobi traffic, airport approach roads, terminal entry, check-in, bag drop, security, immigration and walking to the gate.

The safest practical target is around two hours before a domestic flight and at least three hours before an international flight. Passengers with special documents, groups, oversized luggage or a cross-city transfer should allow more time.

Airline check-in and boarding deadlines vary. A general airport-arrival recommendation does not override the deadline stated by your airline.

Getting to the terminal

JKIA departure drop-off, taxis, transfers and parking

A driver needs the exact terminal, airline and flight time before entering the airport. A vague instruction such as “international departures” may cause a drop-off at the wrong part of the terminal complex.

Private airport transfer

A prearranged driver collects you from a hotel, residence, office or Wilson Airport and drops you at the confirmed terminal entrance.

Book a JKIA transfer

Hotel transfer

Confirm whether the hotel vehicle is private or shared and whether the pickup time allows for Nairobi traffic and your airline’s check-in deadline.

Hotels near JKIA

Uber, Bolt or taxi

Enter the exact terminal in the app or tell the driver before departure. Verify the route and allow time for airport security and traffic.

Taxi and ride-hailing guide

Self-drive and parking

Confirm the parking area, terminal walking route, charges and time needed to leave the vehicle before joining check-in.

Changing terminals

How to move between JKIA departure terminals

Terminal 1A–1E are grouped within the main complex, while Terminal 2 is detached. The correct transfer method depends on whether you are landside, airside, carrying checked baggage or travelling on a protected connection.

Terminal change General orientation Planning advice
1A to 1B Adjacent sections on the western side of Terminal 1. Follow current signs and allow time for security or access restrictions.
1B to 1C Across the upper curved Terminal 1 complex. Do not assume an unrestricted airside walking route; ask airport or airline staff.
1C to 1D Neighbouring sections on the eastern side. International-to-domestic connections may still require immigration, baggage and recheck.
1D to 1E Terminal 1E lies below Terminal 1D on the map. Check whether you are moving for an arrival process or a genuine departure instruction.
Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 Separate buildings with a longer landside movement. Allow extra time and ask the airline or airport staff about the current transfer arrangement.

Landside terminal change

A landside passenger may need to walk or use suitable road transport depending on the terminal pair, luggage, mobility and current access controls.

Airside connection

Follow the airline’s transfer instructions. An airside passenger should not leave the secure area or enter Kenya unless the connection process requires it.

Checked-baggage transfer

Confirm whether the bag is checked through. A passenger collecting and rechecking baggage needs significantly more time than a through-checked connection.

Connecting passengers

Departure terminals for connecting flights at JKIA

A connecting passenger must determine whether the onward flight is international or domestic, whether both sectors are on one ticket and whether baggage is tagged to the final destination. These factors determine whether the passenger remains airside or must enter Kenya, collect baggage and check in again.

International-to-domestic passengers commonly move toward Terminal 1D after immigration, baggage collection and customs. Domestic-to-international passengers move from Terminal 1D toward the current international departure terminal and must allow time for full international check-in, security and immigration.

Separate Nairobi airport

Do not confuse a JKIA departure with Wilson Airport

Wilson Airport is not a JKIA terminal. Wilson uses airport code WIL and is located elsewhere in Nairobi. Many safari and light-aircraft flights depart from Wilson rather than NBO.

A passenger arriving at JKIA and departing from Wilson must collect baggage when required, enter Kenya, travel by road and complete a separate Wilson Airport check-in. There is no secure airside transfer between the two airports.

Passenger facilities

Facilities available in JKIA departure terminals

Facilities differ by terminal and by landside or airside location. Confirm access before relying on a particular lounge, restaurant, shop or service.

Meet-and-assist service
International departure documents

What documents should you prepare before international check-in?

Airline staff may verify your passport, destination visa or entry permission, transit documents, return or onward ticket, health documents and other requirements before accepting baggage or issuing a boarding pass.

Kenya’s eTA relates to entry into Kenya; it is not a universal substitute for the visa, travel authorisation or transit permission required by your destination. Check the official rules for every country on the itinerary, including the airport where you change planes.

Families and assisted travel

Using JKIA departure terminals with children, groups or mobility needs

Extra passengers, special equipment and assistance requirements increase the time needed for drop-off, check-in, security and movement to the gate.

Families with children

Arrive early, keep passports and boarding passes together, confirm stroller handling and prepare liquids, food and child equipment for screening.

Large groups

Use a vehicle with enough passenger and luggage capacity, agree a meeting time and avoid splitting essential documents across different vehicles.

Mobility assistance

Request airline assistance before travel and allow extra time for vehicle unloading, wheelchair handover, check-in and escorted movement through the terminal.

Avoidable problems

Common JKIA departure-terminal mistakes

Most terminal problems come from using an old assignment, confusing NBO with WIL or arriving too late to correct a drop-off or check-in error.

Using an old terminal list

Airline and terminal allocations can change. Verify the current flight rather than copying a previous journey.

Searching only by airline

One airline may use different terminals for domestic and international services.

Ignoring the operating carrier

A codeshare flight may check in with the airline actually operating the aircraft.

Being dropped at Terminal 1 instead of T2

Terminal 2 is a separate building, so a wrong drop-off can consume valuable check-in time.

Confusing Terminal 1E with departures

Terminal 1E is mainly an international-arrivals section, not the default international departure terminal.

Arriving at boarding time

Check-in, bag drop, security and immigration must be completed before boarding closes.

Confusing JKIA and Wilson

NBO and WIL are separate airports connected by road, not two terminals of one airport.

Waiting too long in a lounge

A gate change or early final call can cause a missed flight even after successful check-in.

Forgetting the baggage deadline

An airline may close bag drop before the passenger reaches the counter, even when the aircraft has not departed.
